First Confirmed Coronavirus Case in the Vatican

On Friday the 6th of March it has been confirmed by a Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni that a member of the Vatican has tested positive for the coronavirus. The victim tested positive on Thursday.

The Vatican is officially the smallest country in the world with a population of under one thousand people and an area of just 108 acres. The Vatican has over 5,000 employees and the identity of the person has not been released, but the Vatican is closing down and sterilizing some of their offices.

This comes after Pope Francis was hospitalized when he suffered a bad dose of the flu but it was confirmed that the Pope tested negative for COVID-19.

While it is yet to be confirmed, it has been speculated that the Pope might give his Sunday blessing and Wednesday audience in televised format only, in order to minimize crowds at St. Peter’s.
