Italy’s military has been deployed in the northern city of Bergamo to assist with removing bodies as morgues and churches become too full to accommodate all of the caskets.
In Bergamo, one of the epicenters of the outbreak, military trucks were seen transporting coffins. In other parts of Lombardy, including Milan, the military has been deployed to better enforce the quarantine measures and restrict the number of people out on the streets.
627 people died in Italy on Friday, marking the deadliest day in the outbreak so far. As of 6 pm CET on 20 March, 47,021 Italians had been found to be positive for Covid-19. Nearly half of these were in Lombardy, according to the Ministry of Health.
Funerals are currently banned in Italy as the government seeks to limit large gatherings of people.
