As phase 2 of Italy’s lockdown begins on May 4, the country will begin making masks available for €0.50.
The 50 cent masks will be available at pharmacies and supermarkets, among other retailers. The government announced it would look into removing VAT tax on the protective masks to bring the costs down further.
Italy plans to be 100% self-sufficient in personal protective equipment (PPE) by summer. Some PPE is already sourced locally while other comes from abroad. The country’s procurement commissioner explained the move was necessary given the unprecedented crisis and uncertainty over how long it may last.
