Union representatives have been in touch with the central government to help work out a plan to protect workers in essential industries.
In a late-night address on Saturday, Giuseppe Conte revealed that more non-essential businesses would be shut around the country. However, some of the companies which have been asked to stay open feel that their workers are being exposed to the health crisis.
Unions have stated that they cannot continue to ask workers to report for duty at factories and other locations unless the government takes immediate steps to help protect them.
At immediate risk are Italy’s gasoline pumps, with the petrol union stating it will close as soon as Wednesday because it cannot ensure that its workers are safe from the current virus crisis.
