Lombardy, the northern Italian region where Milan is located, has made masks a requirement for anyone leaving their homes. With the nationwide lockdown still in effect, citizens are only authorized to leave their homes for verifiable essential reasons, such as purchasing food or medicine, or attending medical visits. Now all of these limited trips out of their homes must be undertaken while wearing a mandatory mask.
With the ongoing shortage of medical masks available to purchase, officials have also stated that homemade masks or scarves worn over nose and mouth are acceptable.
The new rule comes after the CDC in the US also recommended wearing masks in public.
The region of Tuscany will soon follow suit and require masks in public. The mayor of Florence announced that he would be sending two masks per person to every household in the city beginning today.
